One of my earliest Seattle lindy hop friends, Lorraine O’Neal, received some terrible news this month; she has been diagnosed with Stage IV (which she theatrically calls Act IV) breast cancer. Lorraine is an amazing single mother of her adorable 1 1/2 year old, Grace. Lorraine will not be able to work much while undergoing aggressive treatment – namely, chemotherapy – to kick her cancer in the face. As such, she won’t be able to work. If you are affiliated with the lindy hop scene, I would humbly ask you to consider donating – even just $5, but certainly more would be welcome – towards meeting her daily living expenses so she can focus on treatment. Further, many of her medical expenses are out of pocket, too.
You can read Lorraine’s story in her own words at the Lorraine’s Gang Facebook page.
You can donate to Lorraine’s GiveForward fund here.
And you can read about her upcoming August 21 fundraiser dance and party night hosted at the Century Ballroom here.
On a personal note, it’s been inspirational and moving to watch the lindy hop community rally to support one of its own. We all have tough times, and this is a case of life really kicking one of us in the teeth. It’s been a beautiful week watching so many people come together to create a network of support and love. Lorraine has a period of treatment ahead, so let’s keep the support up! Thank you.
